Prof. Dr. Andrea Klein

Prof. Dr. Klein is head of pediatric neurology, development and rehabilitation at Inselspital, University Hospital Bern. She studied medicine at the University of Basel and qualified as a pediatric neurologist in 2001. Prof. Dr. Klein’s clinical expertise is centers on neuromuscular disorders in children, with a particular focus on their diagnosis and treatment. She has a strong background in research, having completed a fellowship at the Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre in London in 2006 and returning as a senior research fellow in 2009.

Her career includes significant roles at the Pediatric Neurology Department of the Children’s Hospital Zürich from 2002 to 2015, and as a key researcher in pediatric neuromuscular centers in Basel and Bern. In 2015, she habilitated at the University of Zurich. Prof. Dr. Klein has led clinical trials as the local principal investigator, including the FIREFISH trial for SMA1 infants and the SIDEROS, CIFFREO and LELANTOS trial for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. She co-founded the Swiss registry for Duchenne and SMA in 2008, and is clinical lead of the Swiss Reg NMD, that also collects natural history data of LAMA2-MD patients in Switzerland. Her research continues to focus on advancing therapeutic strategies for rare neuromuscular diseases in children.
